Monthly Conversion Optimisation Tools Update – July 2017

Sally Edwards, Interim Marketing Manager at AWA digital, takes a look at the latest conversion optimisation tools and industry news.

This month I bring welcome news of a platform integration between insights generation tool Hotjar and testing tool Optimizely; review the latest release from Optimizely X Full Stack; and take a look at three handy new mobile controls from wireframing tool Balsamiq.

An insights marriage made in heaven

Hotjar-logo.pngInsights generation tool Hotjar has announced a seamless integration with testing tool Optimizely X so that customers can use the platforms together to gain richer user feedback and analytics.

Customers on the Hotjar Business plan will now automatically have their visitor recordings tagged with Optimizely test variations.

This one-click integration can be enabled via the Integrations page in Settings and once activated on a site, future visitor recordings will be automatically tagged when the visitor is assigned to an Optimizely experiment. Users will also be able to filter recordings on Hotjar based on the variations tagged.

This development creates a union between two of our favourite platforms and we can’t wait to put it to the test.

Johann Van Tonder, chief operating officer for AWA digital

“Hotjar is a popular insights generation tool and Optimizely is one of the most popular A/B testing platforms. This integration will allow users to draw more insights from their split tests.”

New enhancements to Optimizely X Full Stack

optimizely.pngThe developers behind Optimizely X Full Stack have added new capabilities and enhancements to the A/B testing tool based on customer feedback and requests.

Full Stack lets customers quickly and reliably run experiments and launch new features anywhere in the technology stack.

Here is a quick summary of the new enhancements:

  • C# SDK (software development kit) – Optimizely has released a C# SDK that allows  customers to run experiments in their C#.NET applications. C# is the third most popular programming application and brings Optimizely’s total SDK count to 10.
  • User Profiles Optimizely SDKs now include User Profiles that allow customers to carry out experiment assignments that will keep visitors sticking fast to their website.
  • Bucketing improvements to support the launch of User Profiles, Optimizely has added the ability to pause variations and made some updates to its bucketing algorithm to support sticky assignments.

We love it when developers introduce new features based on customer feedback and this is always a strength with Optimizely.

Three new mobile controls from Balsamiq

balsamiq-logo.pngBalsamiq has unveiled three new controls for wireframing mobile interfaces and announced some bug fixes too.

The New App Bar Control – previously known as the Android Action Bar – is a powerful, flexible and handy control for creating material design inspired UIs as well as many other mobile screens.

The simple, but effective, new Android Time Picker Control tells the current time and has linkable Cancel and OK labels.

Finally, the new Android Date Picker Control is another simple feature that does what is says on the tin. This control doesn’t need much customisation apart from showing either a monthly calendar or year view.

Other Improvements and bug fixes announced by Balsamiq include automatically selecting the rectangle shape instead of the ellipse when users transform a shape control; fixing an issue with colours getting preserved erroneously when transforming some control types; fixing the text alignment in the Popover control; fixing an issue with pasting controls after changing a colour; and shortening the Edit menu in web versions to help users working on very small monitors.

Small tasks not performing as they should can be frustrating when setting up new mobile interfaces, so this attention to detail is great to see.

Johann Van Tonder, chief operating officer for AWA digital

“We are increasingly taking a mobile-first approach to optimisation. Balsamiq is our favourite wireframing tool, so we welcome any additions on this front – great stuff.”
