AWA Team GetAWAy – September 2019

The weekend of 6-8 September 2019 marked an important one in the diaries of everyone at AWA. It was the inaugural AWA GetAWAy – a weekend of team building, celebrations and congratulations.

As self-appointed ‘Chief Happiness Officer’, it fell to me to plan the weekend, from the agenda to the reservations to the on-the-day logistics. Phew, I’m exhausted now it’s over!

Being a distributed workforce of specialists, getting the entire team together to celebrate achievements and build upon relationships in person hasn’t always happened as much as we’d like – especially as some of the team are based in South Africa. But if this weekend was a success, then perhaps all that would change… no pressure then!!

Having floated a few location and date ideas around, we settled upon September in York. Here are a few highlights from the weekend:

Chocolate Making at York Cocoa Works

At AWA, we value continuous learning, but sometimes it’s fun to learn about something that will add weight to our waistlines, rather than clients’ bottom lines! So, taking advantage of being in a city where chocolate has played such an important role, it felt appropriate to find out more about this sweet treat and try our hands at chocolate making.

… but Nicole & Lynne found it a little messy!

‘Sightseeing Saturday’

Sometimes there’s a real perspective from seeing something with a fresh set of eyes. And that’s what Saturday was all about, opening everyone’s eyes to the history and beauty that this city they’ve strolled through numerous times before has to offer.

Although some Capetonians found it a little cold!
Michael and Mel at Bettys
It was a day of culinary extremes. From the traditional Yorkshire hospitality at Bettys (as seen here being enjoyed by Michael & Mel)…
Johann manning the BBQ
… to the casual, help yourself hospitality of Dan’s BBQ (lovingly manned by Johann)

York Races

It was serendipitous to discover that the dates we were planning to GetAWAy was Family Day at York Racecourse. AWA are like a second family, so it seemed only fitting to incorporate that into the weekend.

It was a great weekend. But don’t just take my word for it.

4-7 average ratingBeing firm believers in using ‘evidence over opinion’, I sent a post-event feedback form. And the data doesn’t lie. Attendees rated the weekend 4.7 / 5 and 100% of attendees said they would like to make it an annual event.

So looks like I’ve got some work to do to top the inaugural event. But I might just revel in the success of this one for a few months first though if that’s ok?!
